Æthelred was king of Mercia from 675 until 704. He was the son of Anglo-Saxon King Penda of Mercia and came to the throne in c. 675, when his brother, Wulfhere of Mercia, died from an unknown illness. Within a year of his accession, he invaded Kent, UK, where his army destroyed the city of Rochester. In 679, he defeated his brother-in-law, Ecgfrith of Northumbria.
Æthelred was a devout religious king. He married Oswiu of Northumberland’s daughter, and after a hard-fought battle with her brother, Ecgfrith, in c.679, he managed to secure and fix the Mercian border with Northumbria to the line of the River Humber. The drawing of this border effectively ended any future incursions by Northumbria.
After his wife was murdered in 697, Æthelred continued to rule for another seven years before abdicating the throne. He subsequently became a monk at one of the many monasteries he and his wife had set up and died some years later.
He was known as a devout Christian king and made many grants of land to the churches. During his reign, Theodore, the Archbishop of Canterbury, reorganised the church’s diocesan structure, creating several new dioceses, Mercia and Northumbria.
Æthelred’s wife, Osthryth, was the daughter of King Oswiu, one of the dominant 7th-century Northumbrian kings. Sadly Osthryth was murdered in 697, and in 704, Æthelred abdicated, leaving his throne to Wulfhere’s son Coenred. Æthelred became a monk at Bardney, a monastery he had founded with his wife and was buried there. Ceolred, who was Æthelred’s son (though not by Osthryth), became king after Coenred; it is also possible that Æthelred had another son named Ceolwald, who was briefly king before Ceolred.
“They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;” Psalms 83:3-6 KJV

The truth is fundamental because anything else is a lie and identity theft. It is vital for the building of self-worth and self-esteem that the true descendants of these great people know their rich, glorious, noble history. The rightful heirs have the right to be told the truth about who they are and their role in humanity. The truth surely matters.
Liverpool Once Slave Capital Of The World: Liverpool, Merseyside, England, Once the Slave Capital Of The World, was Named after the black Anglo-Saxon Mercia rulers. I was born and raised in Liverpool, England, and the river that runs through Liverpool is called the Mersey. I discovered it was called Merseyside after the Black Mercia Kings, whose descendants would later be put into slavery directly from England.
