Est. 1088 Oldest Education – University of Bologna Italy Founder Emperor Frederick Barbarossa

The University of Bologna (Italian: Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, UNIBO) is a research university in Bologna, Italy. Founded in 1088 by an organised guild of students (studiorum), it is the oldest university in continuous operation in the world, and the first university as a higher-learning and degree-awarding institute. At its foundation, the word universitas was first coined.

Knowing that that was the time when the dark race ruled Europe, it did not take me long to find the identity of the King that granted the university its first Charter (Authentica habita). Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158. They claim the University of Bologna’s founding date is uncertain but believed by most accounts to have been 1088. Credit goes to the King that gave it its first Charter. A Hebrew Israelite so-called BLACK man.

Frederick Barbarossa (December 1122 – 10 June 1190), also known as Frederick I (German: Friedrich I, Italian: Federico I), was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 until his death 35 years later. He was elected King of Germany in Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and crowned in Aachen on 9 March 1152. He was crowned King of Italy on 24 April 1155 in Pavia and emperor by Pope Adrian IV on 18 June 1155 in Rome. Two years later, the term sacrum (“holy”) first appeared in a document in connection with his empire. He was later formally crowned King of Burgundy, at Arles on 30 June 1178. He was named Barbarossa by the northern Italian cities which he attempted to rule: Barbarossa means “red beard” in Italian; in German, he was known as Kaiser Rotbart, which means “Emperor Redbeard” in English. The prevalence of the Italian nickname, even in later German usage, reflects the centrality of the Italian campaigns to his career.

Established in 1088, the University of Bologna holds the title of the oldest in the world university that is still in use today. In the past, the academic offering was only for doctoral degrees, but this has since changed as there are now a range of programs at various levels. There are about 84,200 students enrolled, of which 30,000 are postgraduate students.

It is commonly ranked among the top places of national, European and international rankings both as a whole and for individual subjects. Since its foundation, it has attracted numerous scholars, intellectuals and students from all over Italy and the world, establishing itself as one of the main international centres of learning.
