*Sweyn Forkbeard, Sven Tveskägg (Old Norse: Sveinn Haraldsson tjúguskegg, Danish: Svend Tveskæg; 17 April 963 – 3 February 1014 was King of Denmark from 986 to 1014, also King of the English and King of Norway. King Sweyn was the father of King Harald II of Denmark, King Cnut the Great and Queen Estrid Svendsdatter. In the mid 980s, Sweyn revolted against his father, King Harald Bluetooth, and seized the throne. Harald was driven into exile and died shortly afterwards in November 986 or 987.
In 1000 the allegiance with Trondejarl and Eric of Lade, Sweyn ruled most of Norway. In 1013, shortly before his death, Sweyn became the first Danish king of the English after a long effort.
Though he was a Viking warrior, Sweyn was baptised a Christian, like his father, who converted to Christianity. However, it is said that Sweyn was a violent man who lived in a difficult time. He started his life in violence with a campaign against his father around 986 AD. Sweyn and his ally Palnatoke attacked and deposed Harald. Sweyn then turned his focus on England and, in the early 990s AD, he led a campaign of destruction and fear, laying large waste areas of the country.
Ethelred the Unready (meaning ‘ill advised’ or ’no counsel’) was king of England at this time. He decided to pay Sweyn to return to Denmark and leave the country in peace, a tax known as Danegeld.
However, this was not a successful strategy, and the Danes continued raiding in the north of England, albeit on a smaller scale. Some even began to settle there. Ethelred was persuaded to protect England, but he would have to rid the land of these Danish settlers.
On St. Brices Day, 13 November 1002, Ethelred ordered a general massacre of all Danes in England, including men, women and children. Amongst those killed was Sweyn’s sister Gunhilde.
The citizens became disillusioned with their ineffective king, the English earls reluctantly declared Sweyn king, and Ethelred fled into exile, first to the Isle of Wight and then to Normandy. Sweyn was proclaimed king on Christmas Day 1013, but his reign lasted for weeks; he died suddenly at his capital, Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, on 3 February 1014. Sweyn was buried in England, and his body was later removed to Roeskild Cathedral in Denmark.
